Study of radon reduction through the use of DUKA One in a detached house with a basement

In a detached house with a basement in Silkeborg, Denmark, radon measurements were carried out. The basement was used for several living purposes, including an office, a TV and games room, and a guest room. Although the basement was not used as a permanent bedroom, residents regularly spent extended periods in the rooms above.

After several years of consideration, the homeowner opted to have a radon measurement carried out. The measurement was conducted over a period of two months and showed an average radon level of 800 Bq/m³. This level is significantly above the 100 Bq/m³ that Danish authorities recommend as the upper level for radon in indoor air.

The investigation

The aim of the study was to determine whether the installation of decentralised ventilation could help to reduce radon levels in the basement. The study was carried out by monitoring changes in radon concentration following the installation of two DUKA One and two Pro 50 ventilation units.

Solution selection

Before the installation, various options for reducing radon levels were considered. One of the initial measures was increased manual ventilation, particularly during periods when the family was at home. However, this solution proved difficult to maintain in practice, partly due to the cold and increased heating consumption during the autumn.

Against this background, a more permanent solution was sought. In consultation with DUKA and drawing on knowledge of existing ventilation products, the DUKA One Pro 50 was assessed as a possible solution. The solution was chosen, among other things, because it could be installed without major disruption to the entire property, and because it could simultaneously ensure continuous air exchange in the basement.

Installation and measurement method

Two DUKA One ventilation units were installed in the basement. The installation was carried out by a local electrical contractor. As part of the project, the OBH Group, a consulting engineering firm with expertise in indoor climate, was involved in the measurement process.

Following installation, the radon level was measured with three digital radon meters placed in different locations in the basement. The measurements were initiated on the same day as the installation and continued throughout the winter. The preliminary results were used to assess the development of radon concentration at different ventilation levels.

Results

The initial measurements showed a significant drop in radon levels following the installation of the ventilation units. As early as the day after installation, a reduction of 81 % was recorded whilst the units were operating at ventilation level 1.

In the subsequent period, the radon level was measured at three different speed settings:

At ventilation level 1, an average reduction of 76.4 % was recorded over six days. At ventilation level 2, which was used for seven days, the average reduction was 87.8 %. At ventilation level 3, which was used for six days, the average reduction was 91.4 %.

The results indicate that the measured radon level in the basement fell significantly after the installation of the ventilation units. Furthermore, a correlation was observed between a higher ventilation level and a greater average reduction in the radon level.

Supplementary observations

In addition to the measured reductions in radon levels, residents experienced an improvement in air quality in the basement. According to the homeowner, the air in the living spaces felt fresher, even when the doors had been closed for extended periods.

This observation is subjective and should be seen as a supplement to the measured raw data.

Assessment

Preliminary measurements show that the installation of two DUKA One ventilation units in this particular basement was associated with a significant reduction in radon levels. The average reduction ranged from 76.4 % to 91.4 %, depending on the ventilation level.

It should be noted, however, that the study is based on one specific property and a limited measurement period. The results can therefore not be directly generalised to all buildings with elevated radon levels. The effect of ventilation can depend on several factors, including the building's construction, soil conditions, leaks in the foundation, air exchange rate, location of ventilation units, and usage patterns.

Further measurements over a longer period and in more types of housing will be able to provide a more nuanced picture of in which situations decentralised ventilation can be a relevant method for reducing radon in the indoor environment.

Radon. A brief overview

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is formed underground. The gas can penetrate buildings through cracks and leaks in foundations, floor constructions, and cellar walls. As radon can neither be seen, smelled, nor tasted, elevated levels can only be detected through measurement.

The highest radon concentrations typically occur in basements and ground floors, as these parts of the building are closest to the ground. According to nationwide surveys, a significant number of Danish homes are estimated to have radon levels above the authorities' recommended limit.

Danish authorities recommend that the radon content in indoor environments does not exceed 100 Bq/m³. For new construction, the building regulations require that this level is not exceeded. For existing buildings, it is a recommendation.

Radon is associated with an increased risk of lung cancer, particularly with prolonged exposure. The risk is significantly higher for smokers than for never-smokers. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), radon is the second-largest contributing cause of lung cancer after active smoking.

About DUKA One

DUKA One is a decentralised single-room ventilation solution with heat recovery. The unit works by alternately extracting stale indoor air and supplying fresh outdoor air. During this process, some of the heat from the extracted air is transferred to the supply air via a ceramic heat exchanger.

The solution does not require a traditional duct system throughout the home and can therefore be installed locally in the rooms where ventilation is desired. In this study, the solution was used as a possible measure to reduce radon levels in a basement with elevated readings.

Conclusion

In the property under investigation, a significant reduction in radon levels was recorded following the installation of two DUKA One ventilation units. Preliminary measurements showed average reductions of between 76.4% and 91.4%, depending on the ventilation level.

The results indicate that decentralised ventilation had a positive effect on radon levels in the basement in this case. At the same time, the conclusion should be considered case-specific, as the effect can vary from one home to another. In cases of elevated radon levels, it is always recommended to have specific measurements taken and to assess possible solutions based on the building's conditions.

New life for a damp basement

Trine and Mikkel live in a master builder's villa from 1935 with a large basement. They would like to use the basement for storage and creative space. Unfortunately, they have a very familiar problem in their basement - moisture. And moisture is not the only challenge the basement presents. Water has found its way into the basement several times and they have also had mould.

The basement has therefore undergone a major transformation with mould control, new windows, installation of a heat pump, new tiled floors, treatment of walls with breathable materials.

Although they have done many things to make the basement usable, it is still very damp. One of the ways they experience this is that the textiles Trine has stored in the basement for their creative projects feel damp and clammy.

Poor indoor air quality can affect your health

Poor indoor air quality can lead to headaches, irritated eyes, allergies, poor concentration and, in the worst case, more serious illnesses such as lung cancer and cardiovascular disease.

A healthy indoor climate is important for our health because we spend many hours in our homes. In fact, we typically spend up to 16 hours a day in our homes.

Indoor air quality problems are usually not caused by a single cause, but by a combination of conditions such as poor ventilation, high humidity, tobacco smoke, particles and the radioactive gas radon.

A poor indoor climate can cause discomfort and illnesses such as:

Irritation in eyes, nose and throat
Rashes, redness and itching of the skin
Headaches and fatigue
Nausea and dizziness
Lung cancer and cardiovascular disease

How your indoor climate affects your health

There are many things we can do in our homes that are bad for the indoor environment. When we light candles, the stove, smoke cigarettes or cook, we pollute the air with particles. The particles vary in size and chemical composition, and the largest are filtered out in the nasal hairs and throat, while the smallest can travel deep into the respiratory tract and end up in the bloodstream, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

At the same time, particles can also lead to respiratory diseases, and according to the Danish Health Authority, indoor air pollution costs 2 million healthy life years annually in the EU, with ⅔ of those lost life years being due to particle pollution. And these aren't the only health problems indoor air pollution can cause.

One in 5 Danes suffers from allergies or asthma, and researchers believe that conditions in the indoor environment play a role in this high number. There is a link between moisture damage in the home and symptoms such as wheezing, coughing and asthma. Dust mites, moulds and other microorganisms thrive in damp environments, and moulds are particularly problematic for people who are already predisposed to allergies - they are the ones most likely to react with symptoms such as red eyes, coughing and a runny nose.

The radioactive gas radon is another major indoor climate culprit that can eventually lead to lung cancer if you are exposed to excessive amounts over time.

Tips and tricks

How to solve problems with poor indoor climate

It is very difficult to determine that symptoms such as headaches and irritated eyes are caused by the indoor environment, as this cannot be determined by a blood test or a visit to the doctor.

But you can try to improve your indoor climate yourself and see if it makes a difference:

Ventilate 2-3 times a day for 5-10 minutes: Ventilation solves many indoor climate problems and is an effective way to reduce moisture and particles.
Frequent cleaning: Dust mites are a major allergy culprit and frequent cleaning reduces the amount of unhealthy particles in the air.
Don't dry clothes indoors: A wash contains 2-3 litres of water, which evaporates directly into your living room. This increases the humidity in the air and gives mould fungi the perfect conditions to grow.
Air out when cooking: Baconos and cooking water from potatoes are moisture culprits and contribute unhealthy particles to the air.
Avoid candles: Researchers believe that candles are almost comparable to road rage. Instead, use electric candles or limit their use.

Your kitchen is one of the biggest indoor climate culprits

Every time we go to the kitchen and cook, we emit a lot of particles into our indoor air. A study from the Centre for Indoor Climate and Health in Housing (CISBO) shows that around 30% of particle pollution in a home comes from cooking. Especially when frying, baking and toasting bread, many particles are emitted to the indoor air.

In addition, particles from cooking spread throughout the home up to half an hour after switching off the hob, according to a study by Realdania. The greatest spread occurs in open-plan kitchens where the hob and extractor hood are placed on a kitchen island in the centre of the room.

In addition to particle pollution, a lot of moisture is also released into the indoor environment when cooking rice, potatoes or pasta, for example.

Why is particle pollution dangerous?

Particles are inhaled and settle in the trachea and lungs, which can lead to impaired lung function and cardiovascular disease.

Why do we need to get rid of moisture?

Although dampness in the home is not in itself harmful to the health of the occupants, it is important to get rid of it as mould and dust mites are dependent on moisture. For allergy and asthma sufferers, this can mean a worsening of their symptoms and illness.

Remember the cleaning

The kitchen is one of the most humid rooms in the home, so it's important to keep it cleaner than other rooms in the home, as mould is more likely to grow where there is dirt and moisture. Clean at least once a week and deep clean twice a year.

Tips for a good indoor climate when cooking:

Use the cooker hood - switch it on 5 minutes before you start frying to create a slight negative pressure, which makes the suction work better.
Remember there must be replacement air for what the hood extracts, for example via fresh air vents, open doors or windows.
Close the door to the kitchen or other rooms in the home when using the oven, hob or cooker

Use lids on the pots
Open the window and ventilate. Preferably ventilate with a draught 5-10 minutes after you have finished cooking. If this is not possible, consider investing in a ventilation solution
It can also be a good idea to use an outdoor gas grill, which can be just as effective as a frying pan. This keeps the particles out of the home and gives a feeling of summer and sunshine.

The Danish Health Authority estimates that radon in homes is a contributing factor in around 9 per cent of all new cases of lung cancer. This equates to around 300 people a year, which is almost double the number of people who lost their lives in traffic in 2020.

The longer you live in a house with radon and the higher the concentration, the greater the risk of developing lung cancer. According to the Danish Health Authority, it typically takes between 10 and 40 years from the start of exposure until lung cancer may one day be diagnosed.

How to minimise radon in your home

Make sure to ventilate all rooms several times a day - consider a mechanical ventilation system, which can reduce radon by up to 90 %.
If there are any visible cracks in your floor, make sure to close them.
If your home is going to undergo a major renovation anyway, consider having it radon-proofed.

Measure the level in your home

Since 1998, there has been a requirement for new houses to be radon-proofed. In 2010, it was clarified that radon levels in new buildings must not exceed 100 Bq/m3 indoors. As a result, many older homes are not radon-proofed, and they also have more cracks and leaks.

There are two ways to measure the radon level in your home. You can either have a professional specialising in radon measurement or you can do it yourself using a dosimeter. Hang it up for 2-3 months during the heating season in the rooms you use the most and then send it for analysis. If the radon level is below 100 Bq/m3, you don't need to do anything, but if it is higher, you need to bring it down.

Consider investing in a ventilation solution

Do you know the radon level in your home?

A 2020 study shows that 4 out of 10 homes in Denmark have radon levels that are too high. Radon is a gas that seeps up through the ground under houses, terraced houses and apartments and into the home. Radon is not a problem when it is allowed to seep away from the ground surface. The problems start when there is not enough ventilation in the home and the radon gas is kept inside. This is especially common in houses that have been energy renovated without focusing on ventilation. The study from Aalborg University shows that 39 % of Danish single-family houses, chain and terraced houses built before 2020 have too high radon levels in indoor air.

Do I have Radon?

Radon cannot be avoided and you will never achieve a lower radon level inside than outside, but you can keep it at a low level that is not dangerous. Since you can't see or smell radon, you can only measure the level with radon measuring boxes (dosimeters) or with electronic radon meters. If you have signs of a poor indoor climate, there may also be a risk that the radon level is too high.

What can you do about high Radon levels?

What does it take to have a good indoor climate?

It can be difficult to recognise which of the invisible indoor climate challenges you may have. But if you don't pay attention, you can risk dangerous conditions such as mould growth and high radon levels.

Some indoor climate problems can be solved with a simple change, while other challenges may require a major renovation.

Moisture and particles in the air

Moisture and mould It starts out invisible, but when moisture starts to form on the windowsill or mould stains on the wall, it has definitely become visible. Moisture and mould can be really bad if you have asthma or allergies. For many people, damp and mould appear after they have energy renovated their house and insulated it. Can you reduce radon by ventilating?

YES - you can. DUKA Ventilation has been part of several projects investigating whether radon levels can be reduced through ventilation.

Another factor that can affect our health is radon and its presence in our homes. Radon is a gas that is naturally found underground and is more prevalent in some areas than others. Radon can't be smelled or tasted and the effects are not felt immediately - it can take between 10 to 40 years. Radon is the cause of around 300 new cases of lung cancer every year. A nationwide study suggests that up to 350,000 houses in Denmark have excessive radon levels in their indoor environment.

There are several ways to protect your home against radon. These include installing a radon membrane under the floors or a radon vacuum under the house, but these solutions are often quite costly. And the membrane will also mean additional sealing of the house, which requires ventilation. DUKA Ventilation has participated in several projects investigating whether ventilation can reduce the occurrence of radon, and the results have been extremely positive. The incidence of radon has been reduced by up to 90 %. And then there are the added benefits of ventilation in terms of a good indoor climate with fresh air around the clock, minimised heat loss and removal of moisture from the home, all of which contribute to a healthy indoor climate and a healthy home.

Morten's radon level was reduced from 800 bq/m3 to below 100 bq/m with DUKA One

Morten lives in SIlkeborg with his family. They live in a classic detached house with a basement. In the basement, the teenage children have a TV/games room, there is an office and a guest room. As the basement is an integral part of the home, Morten wanted to have the radon level measured to ensure no one was exposed to the radioactive gas radon.

The family bought a radon test where the radon level in the basement was measured for 2 months. The measurement showed an average radon level of 800 bg/m3. The Danish authorities do not recommend radon levels exceeding 100 bq/m3.

Initially, they solved the problem by having doors and windows open to the basement, but as soon as autumn arrived, this solution was not optimal and also became expensive to heat. Morten investigated several alternatives to get rid of the radon levels and chose to install two DUKA One units in the basement. The choice fell on DUKA One as the solution constantly replaced the air, so there was no build-up, they were able to ventilate the air and at the same time reuse the heat they already had in the home.

After the solutions were installed, they measured the radon level in the basement and already the day after the solutions were installed, the radon level dropped by 81 % even though the unit was running at the lowest ventilation rate. The measurements continued to show a radon reduction of up to 91%.

Thomas got a basement with fresh air and reduced the radon level to below 100 bq/m3

Thomas lives in the Roskilde area with his family. Roskilde is in the next-highest Radon category, and as the family lives in a house with a basement, Thomas was concerned that there was Radon in their home. They invested in a digital radon meter and measured a radon level of 383 bq/m3, and as the basement is used a lot, the radon level meant they needed to find a solution to reduce the radon level.

One of the solutions they looked at was to install a 2-component radon membrane on the concrete deck, but this solution easily ran into 100,000 DKK. As radon is a gas, he looked at a ventilation solution so that the air is constantly changed.

They chose to install DUKA One units as they can be installed directly into the exterior wall and do not require complicated pipework, and with DUKA One solutions they can also reuse the heat they already have. After the installation, their radon level dropped to 71 bq/m3.

A lot depends on the type of “garage”, which can be a broad term, so it's important to find the right ventilation and solution for your garage.

Damp, bad odour in the garage

The poor indoor climate in a garage is often due to it being cooler than a house, while the air is stagnant. If you park a wet car in the garage, the humidity rises, which can result in tools, cars and the like rusting faster.

It's a cold winter day, the family is gathered in the living room, the stove is well lit, candles are lit, there are candles all around the room and a film is playing on the TV. While this sounds very cosy, it can also be very dangerous - at least for your indoor climate and your health.

Candles emit more particles than a diesel car

When a candle is lit, more soot particles are emitted than the soot particles emitted on a busy road. At the same time, harmful nitrogen dioxide will also be produced when something is burned, and this burning is similar to diesel pollution.

A study from Copenhagen Aging and Midlife Biobank (CAMB) shows that among 7,000 respondents in their 50s, almost half had lit stearin candles at least 4 times a week during the winter months.

Why are wood burning stoves so dangerous?

What is the indoor climate like for the children?

Children's rooms are often cluttered with furniture, clothes, stuffed animals, toys and electronics. Many of these items can contribute to a poor indoor climate in their rooms.

When children get new items such as toys, furniture etc. there is off-gassing, which can contribute to a poor indoor climate if this off-gassing is not ventilated away from children's rooms. The same applies to electronics, where new electronics in particular will release chemicals into the environment when they are heated, charged or switched on.

The above and a closed door at night contribute to a poor indoor climate in children's rooms.

Indoor climate consequences

What does a bad indoor climate mean

When the air has been in the room for too long, its quality gradually deteriorates, which can cause headaches, fatigue and difficulty concentrating. The air fills up with CO2 that is exhaled, as well as particle pollution from toys, furniture and electronics, among other things. Indoor air quality is often at its worst at night, as the door to the children's room is often closed and the air is not easily exchanged.

In 2017, Realdania conducted a trial with 59 families with children, where the families were given different advice on indoor climate and ventilation. The trial showed that even though the children's rooms were ventilated before bedtime, the CO2 level rose from a reasonable level during the day to more than double the critical level at night. PPM levels were over 1000 53% during the day.

Indoor climate affects well-being and health, which is why a good and healthy indoor climate is important. There is a proven link between CO2 levels and sleep quality. When CO2 levels are too high, brain activity is dampened and children are particularly vulnerable as they need to learn and develop.

Although it is recommended to ventilate with 5-10 minutes of ventilation 3 times a day, only 28 % and 21 % in families with young children do so.

The bedroom is one of the rooms that most often has a poor indoor climate. This is because, as humans, we release around 2 litres of fluid a day and spend around 7-8 litres a day in the bedroom. The moisture is released when we exhale and we sweat. In addition, many people want their bedrooms to be cold, which can contribute to further condensation, even when warmer air from other rooms enters the bedroom.

Teenagers love to live a secluded life behind closed doors. PCs, tablets and phones are on full blast, keeping them connected to friends, girlfriends.

The doors are almost always closed so there are no disturbances from the adults. That's how it should be and there's nothing abnormal about it.

But unfortunately, there is a dark side. Poor ventilation, exposure to dust from furniture and electronics create an unhealthy environment.

It is therefore important to ventilate properly!

When young people close the door to their room, the CO2 level can rise to up to 5000 ppm. The labour inspectorate recommends that CO2 levels do not exceed 1000 ppm. CO2 levels rise when the air in a room is not replaced either by mixing with air from other rooms in the home or fresh air supplied via either natural or mechanical ventilation.

In addition to the CO2 level, the humidity level rises at the same time, as a person emits around two litres of liquid per day. This moisture increases the risk of mould growth. If an old lunch box or a plate of leftovers is left in the room and the damp, dirty socks are lying in a pile of clothes, dust collects and the room is damp, they can end up becoming small mould spreaders.

Tips for a good indoor climate in the teenage room

Ventilate several times a day to keep young people happy and healthy. Make sure there is a draught to make it effective - alternatively invest in a mechanical ventilation solution.
Keep the door to the room open when the room is not in use - alternatively, invest in a mechanical ventilation solution.
Buy some plants for the youth room and the air will be purified.
Cleaning, please vacuum carpets regularly. Avoid carpets at all costs, but cleaning is not avoided.

Switch off electronics at night. The side benefit is a better night's sleep.
Clothes should be placed in a cupboard or chest of drawers, or in the laundry basket.

Create a better indoor climate in your basement

Many Danes experience problems with dampness in their basements. The soil around the basement is wet and damp, and many basements are poorly insulated. At the same time, the windows in basements are often small, which can make it difficult to ventilate properly.

In many homes, the laundry room is located in the basement, which also increases moisture levels. Laundry contains up to 2-3 litres of water when freshly washed and evaporates into the air when hanging on a drying rack.

Too much moisture in your basement can cause problems with mould, mildew and bad odours. Mould can cause headaches, eye, nose and upper respiratory tract irritation, coughing, fatigue and skin rashes, and people with asthma and allergies are particularly sensitive to the furry fungus. If you have an old house, the moisture can also have major consequences for the structure of your home. Among other things, it can cause serious damage to woodwork.

Check the radon level in your basement

First of all, you can buy a hygrometer that measures the humidity in your basement. If the humidity is above 70 %, your basement will most likely be affected by mould. The humidity should be below 40-45 % in winter and below 60-65 % in summer.

A certain amount of moisture in the basement is inevitable, but you can significantly reduce the level by taking a few simple steps:

Do not dry laundry in the basement.
Ensure good ventilation - the air should be changed frequently, at least 3 times a day for 5-10 minutes. Install a mechanical ventilation system if necessary.

How loud is a DUKA One?

The noise from a DUKA One can always be found in the data sheet or manual for the applicable devices. This is because it varies from device to device and which stage the device is running on.

In the video below, we used an app dB meter to compare the noise level of various items in the home. This test is not accurate or scientific, but just to show differences in sound in the typical home. All sound measurements are made at a distance of approximately 1-1.5 metres from the object.

You want as much peace and quiet as possible, and it's not just the sound from the ventilation that needs to be considered. The acoustics have a significant impact on the sound in your home, as well as noise that is already present. You should therefore consider whether you prefer a comfort model like the S6 Plus, which has dB levels as low as 23 dB, or whether you need a more efficient model like the Pro 50 Plus, which has sound levels down to 29 dB, but has a slightly higher airflow. Recycle both the heat and moisture in your exhaust air

With an enthalpy diffuser, you can recycle both the heat and moisture in your exhaust air. The moisture transfer provides more comfortable supply air in both the cold and warm months.

During the cold months, both moisture and heat from the exhaust air will be transferred to the supply air through the enthalpy membranes, reducing heat loss. The air will feel less dry when moisture is transferred, and it also reduces the risk of cracks in the home's woodwork such as furniture and floors.

During the warmer months, the relative humidity is lowered as moisture is prevented from blowing into the enthalpy hood. This increases the comfort of the supply air as the air feels drier, which is more comfortable than hot humid air.

DUKA One brings a breath of fresh air in the Residential Construction of the Year

Venlig Bolig Plus in Frederiksberg has won the award for Housing Construction of the Year 2019. The building consists of 3 clusters of apartments where either 2 students or 2 refugees live together in an apartment. The students will act as mentors for the refugees living in the Friendly Homes.

Each apartment is 33 square metres and consists of a shared kitchen/living room and bathroom as well as two small individual rooms. The building is designed according to the concept of ‘small living’, which places high demands on the utilisation of the square metres. DUKA One is a brilliant solution here, as it does not require pipework but is installed in the outer wall, freeing up important space in the apartments. In the future, apartment heating costs are also kept down as DUKA One units utilise the heat that is already in the apartments. DUKA One ventilates constantly in cycles of 70 seconds. First, used air is extracted for 70 seconds and the heat is stored in the ceramic core. After 70 seconds, the unit reverses direction and blows in fresh air that is heated by the ceramic core.

In the apartments, a DUKA One S6 is installed in each room and a DUKA One S6B in the bathroom. DUKA One S6B is specially developed for wet rooms, where the unit's two motors alternately suck out and blow in for 70 seconds, after which the direction is changed. During extraction, the heat is recycled. The two motors ensure that an even pressure is maintained in the bathroom. If moisture is present, both motors will extract air until the moisture level is below the set limit again.

The structure of the building encourages a sense of community with roof terraces in each cluster and common rooms on the ground floor. These common areas are also ventilated with DUKA One units.

The clusters are constructed from prefabricated modules that can be easily prepared for the DUKA One units at the factory, where the holes for the ceramic core are pre-drilled, making final assembly on site easy.

Housing in Copenhagen - and especially in Frederiksberg - is often expensive, so it has been important to keep construction costs and thus also rents down. The modular construction and DUKA One units have helped to ensure this. Here, a resident has to pay just under DKK 3,000 in rent per month.

User and login on DUKA Smart App

The first time you open the DUKA Smart App, the app asks you to log in. In our previous apps it has not been necessary to log in, but we have added it as it allows you to save DUKA Devices to your account. You can therefore always find your devices on a new phone by logging into your account, and therefore also control the devices from multiple mobiles in the home.

You create a user by creating a username and associate it with an email, in case you forget the code or your username, you can have it sent to you via email.

DUKA One has eliminated the odour in my basement

Despite extensive insulation and renovation of his basement, Jesper from Viborg was still experiencing the unpleasant odour in his basement. He realised that some form of ventilation was needed and after talking to a ventilation professional, Jesper decided to get a DUKA One for the job.

We renovated the basement with a focus on good insulation, but it still had a bit of a basement odour, so we thought it probably needed some form of ventilation. I spoke to a professional who told me about DUKA One and what it can do for basement odours and the indoor climate in the basement.

The difference is easy to spot

The difference was clear - and the solution simple

Within the first week of becoming a homeowner, I had water in the basement twice. I quickly got the water under control, but worse was the humidity and the poor indoor climate we were experiencing. Even though I'm good at airing out, it just never seemed to be quite enough to create a desirable indoor climate.

I'd better hurry up and tell you that all the children's rooms in the house are located in the basement. Three of them already had DUKA ventilation installed by the previous owner of the house, while the last room - the one with the high humidity - did not.

The difference in air quality was striking, so the solution was a no-brainer.

It didn't take me long to find an installer who could help me install a DUKA One Pro 50 S ventilation unit. I chose a complete installation where the hole was drilled and the ventilation installed by the installer, but actually the installation of the ventilation unit itself is very simple, and I would venture to say that most people could easily do it themselves. The hole itself needs to be drilled in an external wall, and you can benefit from the help of a professional who has the equipment to do this.

One of the advantages of DUKA One is clearly its scalability. It's easy to start with one or two, see and feel the effect on the indoor climate and then expand with more. In fact, the indoor climate in our basement is now so good that I think it beats the ground floor.

What often happens when you get new windows and retrofit old houses is that they become too tight. The same thing has happened to us, which means, for example, a lot of condensation in the windows, which is difficult to ventilate. Something we no longer experience in the basement, so I know there's an easy solution - also for the indoor climate on the ground floor.

Maybe you're worried about the heat and the economy? I certainly did myself, but you don't have to. Fortunately, DUKA One's electricity consumption is low, and the unit itself has heat recovery. This means that the unit retains heat when the air is exchanged in the room.
